Sinopec has announced that all 270000 cubic meters of storage tanks at the Qingdao Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Terminal of Sinopec Natural Gas Company have been completed. This storage tank is independently developed by Sinopec and is currently the largest and first completed ultra large liquefied natural gas storage tank in China. After being put into use, it will significantly enhance the natural gas supply guarantee capacity in North China.


The Qingdao LNG receiving terminal of the Natural Gas Branch is located in the Dongjiakou Economic Zone of Qingdao City. It is the first LNG receiving terminal of Sinopec and the only liquefied natural gas receiving terminal currently in use in Shandong Province. At present, the station is accelerating the preparations for the production of storage tanks and is expected to be officially put into use by the end of the year. At that time, the annual unloading capacity of the station will reach 11 million tons, and the annual gas supply capacity will be increased to 16.5 billion cubic meters, which can meet the gas demand of 90 million households for one year. It will enter the ranks of LNG receiving stations with a capacity of tens of millions of tons and become the largest LNG receiving station with the largest annual transfer capacity in China during the same period. This can not only further optimize the energy structure and promote economic and social development in North China, but also play an important role in enhancing the region's natural gas peak shaving and supply guarantee capacity, improving the atmospheric environment, and helping China achieve the "dual carbon" goal.


The first 270000 cubic meter LNG storage tank in China, innovatively adopting a "squat" design. The 270000 cubic meter LNG storage tank completed this time is the third phase storage tank project of the Qingdao LNG receiving station of the natural gas branch, with a diameter of 100.6 meters and a height of 55 meters. It officially started construction in August 2021 and took 25 months to safely and smoothly complete the construction task. The construction is jointly undertaken by the natural gas branch, the design unit China Petrochemical Engineering Construction Co., Ltd. (SEI), and the construction unit China Petrochemical 10th Construction Co., Ltd, Compared to the traditional "thin and tall" storage tank, this tank adopts a "short and chubby" design, which has better seismic resistance and stability. At the same time, a basic heat tracing belt is installed at the bottom of the tank, and a "ground tank" form is adopted to ensure that the ultra large liquefied natural gas storage tank can stand upright and stably.


Independently developed technology, significantly improving construction efficiency. During the construction process, the Sinopec project team independently developed a complete set of 270000 cubic meters of full capacity LNG storage tank technology, innovatively developed 5 provincial and ministerial level construction methods, adopted 17 independent intellectual property patent technologies, and successfully overcame multiple construction difficulties. In just 18 months, the main structure of the storage tank was completed, greatly improving construction efficiency, and providing experience and reference for the construction of super large LNG storage tanks in China.


The LNG storage tank with the highest degree of localization. The project construction is based on the Sinopec technology innovation platform, targeting key points in the LNG industry chain, and has successfully achieved the localization application of more than 20 core equipment, significantly reducing procurement costs, and raising the localization level of the tank to over 95%. It is currently the most domestically produced LNG tank. At the same time, the project also implements a smart chemical safety control system, integrating artificial intelligence recognition algorithms into the video monitoring system, forming an "AI Video Smart Eye" system to strengthen safety management level.

The first and second phases of the Qingdao LNG receiving station of the natural gas subsidiary were completed and put into operation in November 2014 and August 2021, respectively. The annual transfer capacity reached 7 million tons, and the cumulative import of liquefied natural gas has exceeded 41 million tons. The gas supply scope covers provinces and cities such as Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hebei, and Henan, making it one of the main gas sources in northern China.
