Add 100 billion cubic meters of large gas fields to the Sichuan Basin

On January 17th, Sinopec announced that the "Deep Ground Engineering · Sichuan Chongqing Natural Gas Base" has made another breakthrough. The proven geological reserves of 1330.12 billion cubic meters in the Hexingchang gas field located in the Sichuan Basin, submitted by Sinopec Southwest Petroleum Bureau, have been approved by the expert group of the Ministry of Natural Resources. This marks the birth of a new ultra deep, fully packed tight sandstone 100 billion cubic meter gas field in China, making a positive contribution to ensuring national energy security.

It is reported that the gas field has innovated its reservoir formation theory and technology, achieving the first large-scale and efficient production of the Xujiahe Formation gas reservoir in the Sichuan Basin. The Hexingchang gas field is located in Deyang City and Mianyang City, Sichuan Province. As early as 1988, the Southwest Petroleum Bureau of Sinopec discovered that the region has abundant reserves. However, due to its deep, high-pressure, and ultra-low porosity tight sandstone gas, its development efficiency is a world-class challenge, and it has always been difficult to achieve effective utilization. Several generations of geologists from Sinopec have continuously overcome bottlenecks, especially since 2018. With the support of Sinopec's major scientific and technological research projects and interdisciplinary collaboration, they have driven the utilization of tight sandstone reserves, innovatively formed the enrichment law and benefit development technology system of ultra deep tight sandstone gas, achieved breakthroughs in old strata and new fields, and made it possible for "difficult to use" reserves to become "efficient to use". The confirmed geological reserves submitted this time are mainly located in the Xujiahe Formation, with burial depths ranging from 4500 to 5500 meters. At present, Southwest Petroleum Bureau has implemented 21 new wells in the area, with an average daily gas production of 155000 cubic meters per well and a new natural gas production capacity of 1.8 billion cubic meters, effectively supporting the submission of proven reserves.

Guo Tonglou, Executive Director and Party Secretary of Sinopec Southwest Petroleum Bureau Co., Ltd., introduced that the Hexingchang gas field belongs to the ultra deep, ultra-low porosity, ultra-low permeability tight sandstone large gas field. The exploration and development of this type of gas field has no successful experience to learn from internationally. We have integrated conventional natural gas and shale gas reservoir formation theories and technologies, innovatively formed applicable reservoir formation theories and technologies, and achieved the transformation from resources to reserves, from reserves to production, and scale production. Next, we will continue to develop characteristic theoretical technologies for ultra deep carbonate rocks, deep shale gas, and deep tight sandstone gas, to assist in the construction of deep ground engineering and the Sichuan Chongqing National Natural Gas Base with a capacity of 100 billion cubic meters.

The Sichuan Basin is rich in natural gas resources. For many years, Sinopec has been continuously developing oil and gas in the Sichuan Basin, promoting the construction of a natural gas production capacity base worth 100 billion yuan in the Sichuan Chongqing region with high quality. As of now, Sinopec has discovered nearly 300 billion cubic meters of natural gas geological reserves in the Sichuan Basin, with a cumulative production of over 200 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
