The 2024 Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Expo was recently held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, with over 2200 exhibitors from more than 160 countries and regions participating. As one of the largest oil and gas exhibitions in the world, this expo focuses on the theme of artificial intelligence and sustainable energy transformation, exploring the future of sustainable development in the energy industry through technology solution exhibitions and conference discussions. More than 300 Chinese companies showcased the latest technological achievements in the fields of digitization, decarbonization, and renewable energy at the expo.
Focusing on artificial intelligence and decarbonization
There are a total of 16 exhibition halls and 30 national pavilions set up in the exhibition area of this year's expo. The expo also features 10 themed strategic seminars, 2 themed technical seminars, and 157 roundtable discussions, totaling 370 seminars. The discussion focuses on areas such as decarbonization, hydrogen energy, digitalization, offshore oil and gas, and financial investment. The expo has specially set up an "Artificial Intelligence Zone" to gather technology companies, including Microsoft, to showcase sustainable energy solutions.
Sultan Jabir, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology of the United Arab Emirates and CEO of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, emphasized the transformative power of artificial intelligence in his speech, calling it the "innovation that defines the era". He believes that artificial intelligence has driven productivity improvement and accelerated the energy transition process, building a bridge between reducing carbon emissions and driving economic and social development.
UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail stated that the UAE is committed to increasing the proportion of clean energy in the country's total energy consumption from 25% to 50% by 2050, reducing the carbon footprint of power generation by 70%, and improving energy efficiency by 40%, achieving a balance between strengthening energy security, promoting economic stability, and meeting global energy demand. The UAE will strive to build a low-carbon production chain and accelerate its economic diversification transformation.
Christopher Hudson, President of DMG Exhibition Company, the organizer of the expo, stated that there is a huge funding gap between the global South and North in terms of energy transition. Developed economies should provide more financial support for large-scale clean energy projects in emerging market economies, otherwise the energy transition will be delayed and regional inequality will be exacerbated.
Chinese enterprises' innovative technology solutions receive attention
At the expo, hundreds of Chinese funded enterprises showcased their technological innovations and solutions in the oil and gas industry chain. At the exhibition hall 11, the "Deep Sea One" model on the CNOOC booth has attracted much attention. Deepsea One "is the world's first 100000 ton deepwater semi submersible production and storage platform independently developed and built by China. The construction of "Deep Sea One" marks a significant breakthrough in China's deepwater oil and gas field development capabilities and deepwater marine engineering equipment construction level, with the world's first semi submersible platform column oil storage, the world's largest span semi submersible platform truss block technology, and the world's first wet semi sitting pier large closure technology used on land. In Exhibition Hall 15, CNOOC Service, CNOOC Development, and CNOOC Engineering formed a joint booth to showcase brand products such as "Xuanji", "Haikui No.1", and "Hailong".
A carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and storage sand table was placed on the Sinopec booth. This project captures and liquefies carbon dioxide from the tail gas of Qilu Petrochemical's coal to gas industry, and transports it to Shengli Oilfield for oil displacement and storage. It can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1 million tons per year, equivalent to planting nearly 9 million trees. China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) has highlighted its "10000 meter deep well" drilling technology. In March of this year, the drilling depth of Well 1 in the Tarim Oilfield of PetroChina exceeded 10000 meters. It is understood that drilling at depths of tens of thousands of meters is the field with the most technical bottlenecks and challenges in oil and gas engineering.
Zhenhua Oil showcased its infrared gas monitoring and intelligent warning system applied in onshore oil fields in Abu Dhabi, and its "digital twin 3D visualization platform" implemented in the Dongba oil field in Iraq. The infrared gas monitoring and intelligent warning system is like a "see through eye", which can effectively detect gas leaks at oil field wellheads, pipelines, or treatment plants through infrared hyperspectral imaging. This is also the first time that China's long-distance infrared monitoring technology has been applied on international high-end oil field sites. The "Digital Twin 3D Visualization Platform" uses high-precision 3D modeling and IoT technology to reflect various operational parameters of project equipment in real-time on the platform. Staff can conduct virtual inspections of the site in the control room.
At the exhibition site, I had exchanges with many Chinese companies and learned about many excellent Chinese products and technologies, "said Mohammed Salami, senior engineer at Abu Dhabi National Oil Company's onshore oil company. More and more Chinese companies are entering the Middle East energy market, exchanging ideas with outstanding companies from around the world, delivering successful projects, and contributing to the development of the regional energy industry.
Deepening pragmatic energy cooperation between China and Arab countries
At the 10th Ministerial Conference of the China Arab States Cooperation Forum, China proposed to build a more three-dimensional energy cooperation pattern with Afghanistan. The participating Chinese enterprises actively participate in the cooperation in the oil and gas field between China and Arab countries, jointly carry out research and development of new energy technologies and equipment production, and contribute to the deepening of practical cooperation between China and Arab countries.
Not long ago, China Shipbuilding Group's Jiangnan Shipyard renewed the transaction contract for two 93000 cubic meter ultra large liquid ammonia transport ships with its partner in Algeria. This vessel is currently the world's largest liquid ammonia transport ship, not only the preferred vessel for long-distance transportation of green ammonia, but also capable of carrying liquefied petroleum gases such as propane and butane.
During the Expo, China Petroleum Group Oriental Geophysical Exploration Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Oriental Geophysical Exploration") signed a contract with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company for high-density exploration projects in onshore oil fields, with a contract amount of 490 million US dollars. It is reported that Oriental Geophysical will use high-density and intelligent equipment technology to conduct exploration operations in the onshore oil field area of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. Jiangsu Guofu Hydrogen Energy Technology Equipment Co., Ltd. and its partners have reached an agreement with the Khalifa Economic Zone Group of the United Arab Emirates to jointly establish an advanced hydrogen equipment manufacturing facility in Abu Dhabi, including the manufacturing of hydrogen generation, storage, and transportation equipment.
The UAE and China have carried out many beneficial cooperation in ensuring energy security and promoting the development of renewable energy. China has brought numerous new technologies and reliable products in the energy field to the UAE, "said Ralph Samaha, manager of Masaud Energy Company in the UAE. Promoting sustainable development in the energy sector is a common goal of the international community, and" the prospects for energy cooperation between the UAE and China are broad. Ahmed Abuli, the relevant person in charge of Oman Petroleum Development Company, stated that both Middle Eastern countries and China are committed to promoting sustainable energy development. Middle Eastern countries look forward to more practical cooperation with China to create a sustainable energy future and achieve mutual benefit and win-win results.
Wang Zhen, President of the Energy Economics Research Institute of China National Offshore Oil Corporation, stated that there is a strong driving force for energy cooperation between China and Middle Eastern countries, and significant achievements have been made. Under the framework of jointly building the "the Belt and Road", the two sides will strive to build a new pattern of three-dimensional energy cooperation, promote the extension of the industrial chain upstream and downstream, and expand cooperation in the field of new energy on the basis of strengthening traditional energy cooperation, which will make greater contributions to building a community with a shared future for mankind and enhancing the well-being of both peoples.
